REPORTS TO:           PRINCIPAL/SUPERVISOR

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

            Assist certified teacher(s) in providing instruction to individual or small groups; monitor   and report student progress.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

 

1. Tutor individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing and implementing academic and life

    skills instruction as directed by the teacher(s) maintain records of student progress.

2.  Participate as a member of an instructional team including remediation teams.

3.  Assist in scoring and recording test information.

4.  Monitor and report behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress

     regarding student performance and behavior; check and assist students with lab work as

     necessary.

5.  Perform routine clerical duties such as preparation of instructional and classroom materials;

     have basic knowledge of computer operation; operate copy machines; maintain classroom

     records; maintain attendance records; maintain service logs for the purpose of Medicaid billing. Transport students as needed, in a board owned motor vehicle, which does not require a CDL to operate, for the purpose of participating in community based instruction activities.

6.  Provide support to the teacher(s) by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating

     audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment, distributing and collecting

     paper and supplies.

7.  Assist in overseeing students while in labs; provide for supplies inventory as needed.

8.  Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and

     general guidance.

9.  Confer, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.

10.Contact the parents of students who are absent.

11.Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and

     regulations. Assist students with personal/self care needs including but not limited to the

     following activities: Handling and positioning, wheelchair care, walker care and monitoring, bowel care, skin care and monitoring, gastrostomy tube feeding, Shunt monitoring, catheterization and postural drainage; and changing trach ties, oxygen supplementation and other duties as assigned   

12.Direct group activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring lunchroom and

     playground activities as assigned; assist in emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and

     field trips.

13.Participate in required meetings and required in service training programs as assigned.  

14.Perform other reasonable duties as assigned by the supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

1.  Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, 

     language and reading.

2.  Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.

3.  Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

4.  Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

5.  Basic record-keeping techniques.

6. Confidentiality of student records

7. Documentation for Medicaid billing

8. Best practice in assisting in implementation of life skills/personal care skills instruction

     including members of ethnic communities.

12.  Operate instructional and office equipment.

13. Ability to drive and be insurable to transport students as needed in a board owned motor vehicle which does not require a CDL to operate.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent and (1) have completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education; (2) obtained an associate’s or higher degree. 

Must pass a criminal records check, a physical examination, and tuberculosis skin test prior to employment.

Effective 7-1-14 ( for all current employees) Must pass a driver’s record background check and qualify as an insurable driver under our district insurance policy, if assignment includes transporting students for community based instruction activities.

Effective: 8-23-2013 for all employees hired after this date
